Photonic integrated circuits and systems for sustainable and efficient photonic networks

Photonic networks are essential infrastructure supporting next generation 6G, AI applications, Internet of Things, automotive, etc.. With data traffic annual growth >20%, already today ICT sector generates around 3% of global emissions and EU estimates that without any innovation this could increase to 14% by 2040. This urges sustainable photonic networks to support the steady-growing data traffic while reducing the energy consumption.

Aim of the project

The aim of this project is to build sustainable and energy efficient next generation high capacity photonic networks by designing and developing innovative multiband photonic integrated switching nodes and control systems with an estimated network energy saving of more than 30%.
