Queen Máxima attended the plenary programme where experts and scientists from the University of Twente provided explanations and demonstrations about quantum physics and technology. They also talked about the scientists who challenged classical physics in the early 20th century, enabling the development of applications such as MRI scans, solar panels, lasers and chip technology. During the event, Queen Máxima and a number of students took part in two experiments that provide insight into the basic principles of quantum technology and show how quantum mechanical processes can be seen in everyday materials.
Since 2022, 14 April has been World Quantum Day. This is an initiative by scientists from more than 65 countries to involve the general public in understanding and discussing quantum physics and technology. Quantum physics is the most fundamental theory that exists to describe nature at the level of the elementary particles and forces that make up our universe. With this event, the University of Twente not only wants to create awareness, but also inspire young people to contribute to the future of quantum technology.
