Scaling up ReUse for Complex Machinery

Although many returned components are technically sound and still have significant remaining life, the lack of accessible and reliable information about their usage, status, and compatibility poses a barrier to reuse. Current data is fragmented across companies and systems, making it difficult to make informed decisions about reuse and to capitalize on residual value – resulting in unnecessary waste and higher costs.

The ReUse4Scale-project aims to overcome these barriers by developing knowledge and technology that enable, scale, and embed reuse within the supply chain. The main focus is on building digital infrastructure – including a Digital Product Passport (DPP) – to provide standardized, interoperable, and decentralized access to information about components throughout their lifecycle. This approach aligns with European policies (such as the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP), Ecodesign regulations such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), and national programs promoting circular value chains and reducing raw material usage).

The project targets OEM and Tier-1 partners but serves as a model for Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers. Research is conducted into the technical, legal, and governance requirements for remanufacturing processes to enable large-scale reuse of complex modules within the value chain. Specific research focuses on the design of the triage process, integration and automation of data flows, DPP data structures, innovations in business models, and federated governance systems for data access and value distribution.

Key project outcomes include: - A prototype triage process for automated identification, classification, and refurbishment of components; - A proof-of-concept DPP format for data exchange within the supply chain; - Decentralized access to information about production, usage history, and component quality to support “Re-x” actions (reuse, repair, refurbishment, etc.); - A shared legal framework and governance model for a financially balanced and transparent circular business model. The impact will be reduced waste, improved data-driven decision-making, accelerated reuse processes, and new business opportunities worth millions of euros – especially within the ecosystem of a premium OEM.
