Microscopic Optical-Chip-Based Physcial Unclonable Functions

Photonic integrated circuits are a promising candidate for a new era of optical hardware authentication.

They are compact, cheap, and fully compatible with existing telecom infrastructure. By using these chips as optical physical unclonable keys we introduce a scalable new approach to making authentication fully quantum proof. In this project we explore the limits of how small these fingerprint chips can become through the rapid prototyping of novel chip designs. We will explore approaches ranging from minor tweaks to coupling strengths and lengths, to more radical adjustments of the resonator types and even introducing optical feedback.
