Composite Autonomous Manufacturing & Repair – Testbed voor defensiematerialen en schaalvergroting

The project focuses on scaling up the production of smart composite materials for defense applications. By replacing costly, labor-intensive, and poorly scalable processes with a standardized, autonomous, and interoperable system, large-scale production and quality assurance of these smart materials can be achieved.

Project goal

The aim is to develop an autonomous pilot line that reduces production costs, increases efficiency, and ensures quality. This testbed facilitates rapid scaling and provides a platform for testing and validating new composite materials and production methods, in close collaboration with supply chain partners and end-users such as Defence.

Approach

The project includes: - Design and realization of a concept prototype for automated production process for composite structures. - Concept for integration of inline sensor technology (Vision and DVM NDT) and AI-driven quality control for the validation of smart materials in relevant defence applications. - Development of a framework for Digital Manufacturing and a Digital Product Passport (DPP) for traceability and lifecycle management.

Intended project results

The project delivers an operational concept prototype of an autonomous pilot line for composite production, including integrated quality control and traceability via a Digital Product Passport. The impact: lower production costs, higher efficiency, faster market introduction of smart materials, and strengthening the position of the Netherlands in the international security market.
