This project investigates how deformable mirrors can be improved to enable sharper observations in telescopes and future space applications. TNO and DEMCON are developing and testing new lightweight and stable materials to make mirrors more accurate, more reliable and better able to withstand extreme conditions. This supports applications such as astronomy, space surveillance and satellite observation.

Smart mirrors for a clearer view of Earth and space

In this project, TNO and high-tech company DEMCON are collaborating on the development of smart, deformable mirrors for the telescopes and observation systems of the future. These mirrors can rapidly adjust their shape to correct distortions caused, for example, by temperature changes, vibrations or conditions in space. The project is investigating new lightweight and stable materials and developing expertise in the design, construction and testing of these mirrors. This will lay the foundations for sharper observations in astronomy, space surveillance and future satellite missions, and will further strengthen the Netherlands’ position in high-quality optical technology.
