The figures show that turnover in the Dutch semiconductor industry has risen every year since 2019: from 21 billion euros in that year to 46 billion euros in 2025, representing an average annual growth rate of around 14 per cent. This doubling is not only due to the growth of existing companies, but also to their increased focus on semiconductor activities: the share of turnover attributable to these activities rose from 46 per cent to 51 per cent. New entrants made only a limited contribution to this growth.
Employment also rose sharply, from 23,000 to 43,000 employees in the sector, a trend that largely kept pace with the growth in turnover.
This research is relevant because the chip sector accounts for an ever-increasing share of the Dutch economy and plays a key role in the global semiconductor supply chain, particularly in the field of mechanical engineering. Furthermore, chips form the technical foundation for the rapid development of artificial intelligence. For the industrial policy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy – within which the semiconductor industry is a priority area – the new dataset also provides a basis for monitoring developments in the sector and tailoring policy accordingly.
