Innovatieve Geopolymeer-gebaseerde Radar Absorberende Coatings

Materialz BV, an Advanced Materials start-up, and the University of Twente are developing a revolutionary radar-absorbing coating based on Polycondensed Mineral Technology, a circular meta-material. This multifunctional, circular coating is heat-resistant up to 1200°C, corrosion-resistant, and masks IR signatures. The project increases the survivability of defense assets through advanced signature management and strengthens the strategic autonomy of the Dutch industry.

Breakthrough in Smart Materials: Sustainable stealth technology

Current coating systems, including RAM coatings, have poor resistance to extreme conditions, are often environmentally damaging, and depend on non-European raw materials. We overcome these limitations with the fully European Polycondensed Mineral Technology (PMT). We are optimizing an inorganic matrix to create a single-layer coating system that reduces radar and IR signatures. The coating is 'surface tolerant' and can be applied directly to challenging surfaces in the field. The collaboration with the University of Twente provides critical knowledge regarding surface technology, and their renowned Lifetime Performance Lab allows the coating to be subjected to the most rigorous performance testing.

Circular impact and strengthening defense

The research results are dual-use: besides stealth applications, PMT offers enormous potential for the maritime and construction sectors. The coating is completely free of microplastics and VOCs, and is 100% recyclable. By utilizing widely available European minerals, the project strengthens the autonomy of the Dutch defense. The University of Twente acts as a central knowledge hub to make the acquired expertise broadly available to the Dutch manufacturing industry. In doing so, the project makes a direct contribution to national circular objectives and the strengthening of the Netherlands Defence Technological and Industrial Base (NLDTIB).
