Advanced Energy-Optimised Battery Cells for Aerospace Applications

AEROCELL develops next-generation battery cells for defence UAVs targeting energy densities above 550 Wh/kg - a performance level not commercially available today. Led by TNO with industrial partner Tulip Tech, the project pushes the boundaries of cell performance for single-use defence missions.

Battery performance beyond current limits

Current lithium-ion batteries constrain the range and payload of defence UAVs. AEROCELL develops high-performance pouch cells based on high areal capacity NCM cathode electrodes combined with thin lithium metal anodes and optimised electrolyte additives. Cells are also charged beyond conventional voltage limits to maximise stored energy - deliberately trading cycle life for energy density, well suited to single-use or limited-cycle defence missions.

From electrode to battery pack - Dutch expertise

AEROCELL is led by TNO, with expertise in advanced electrode processing, pouch cell assembly, and nextgeneration battery integration. Industrial partner Tulip Tech defines UAV-specific requirements and leads system integration and pack-level demonstration. The OBIC bridges laboratory results to pre-serial production, connecting the Dutch battery value chain from materials to complete battery systems.

Sustainable manufacturing and broader impact

Dry electrode processing eliminates toxic solvents such as NMP, significantly reducing production energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Results are applicable beyond defence UAVs to aerospace, robotics, maritime systems, and highperformance mobility. Project outcomes form a foundation for national and European follow-up projects, scale-up at OBIC, and market introduction of next-generation high-energydensity battery cells.
