Launch of R&D Top 50 2026 survey: companies called upon to demonstrate innovation power

21 April 2026

TNO, VNO-NCW, and Technisch Weekblad (TW) have started the research for the 2026 R&D Top 50. This annual ranking maps out the fifty largest private investors in research and development (R&D) in the Netherlands. The list serves as an important indicator of the innovative strength of the Dutch business community and offers unique insight into how companies contribute to technological progress.

News

For the new edition, companies are invited to submit their R&D data. The research focuses on R&D expenditures that actually take place in the Netherlands. This creates a realistic picture of innovation investments on Dutch soil.

Why participating pays off

Participation in the R&D Top 50 offers companies several benefits. Organisations included in the list receive recognition for their innovation efforts and position themselves as leaders within their sector. Additionally, participation yields valuable insights into the company's position relative to other R&D investors.

Moreover, participation contributes to a broader understanding of the Dutch innovation ecosystem. The results are used to analyse trends and developments and to highlight the importance of R&D investments to policymakers and the general public.

Importance for the Netherlands

The R&D Top 50 shows where and how companies invest in innovation and makes it clear that these investments are crucial for economic growth and competitiveness. At the same time, previous editions underscore that R&D expenditure in the Netherlands is highly concentrated among a relatively small group of companies, which further emphasizes the importance of broad participation.

Companies that wish to make their innovation capacity visible and contribute to a stronger innovation climate are therefore explicitly invited to participate in the survey for 2026.
