The government sees opportunities to use AI to strengthen security, for example in the areas of cyber resilience and defence innovation. At the same time, the European AI infrastructure is heavily dependent on non-European providers, which poses risks given the current geopolitical tensions. The government aims to reduce these dependencies and enhance Europe’s capacity to act.
Diplomacy and new coalitions
Specifically, the government is focusing on:
Targeted diplomatic efforts: in Brussels, to ensure effective and workable European legislation and regulations on AI; and globally, by investing in diplomats’ knowledge and skills in the field of AI.
New coalitions and partnerships: to protect our shared values, prevent misuse and strengthen our own industry, the Netherlands must forge new collaborations – both within Europe and with like-minded countries worldwide.
Strengthening European AI capacity and infrastructure: so that we can enhance our understanding of the opportunities and risks of AI, enabling the Netherlands and its European partners to shape the AI agenda and strengthen European industry on the basis of their own expertise.
